One-Stop Cancer Shop Returns November 1

One Stop Cancer Shop (OSCS), an Omaha-based organization dedicated to fighting medical mistrust and bringing cancer screenings to the community, will host its last free cancer screening event of the year next month in South Omaha, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Nebraska Medicine.

The upcoming event is on Nov. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition, located at 2226 N St.

Those in attendance can be screened for some of the most common cancers such as lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancers. Participants will be paired with a nursing student from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing to complete an intake history and be guided through the event. Nursing students will be trained on the role of medical mistrust in health disparities.

Studies find that a lack of access to both medical care and a trusted relationship with a physician can be deadly for people, especially in communities of color, who often face higher cancer mortality rates.

OSCS began last year as a community initiative to combat medical mistrust and bridge the gap between access to cancer screenings for underserved populations. For the past two years, OSCS has hosted free cancer screening events in South and North Omaha.

With over 40 people screened at OSCS’ screening event last month at Mount Calvary Community Church in North Omaha, the organization plans to continue its mission by serving the South Omaha community with various screening options and resources.

Experts from the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will provide participants with information and guidance on cancer screening, based on national guidelines, and, in partnership with Nebraska Medicine, also will provide breast, lung and prostate screenings. Every Woman Matters, a federally funded program within the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, will distribute colorectal screening kits.

Community partners are Mount Calvary Community Church, Christ Love Unity Church, North Omaha Area Health (NOAH), AARP North Omaha Chapter 5253, Church of the Living God, the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition and My Sister’s Keeper.

In addition to cancer screenings, attendees will have access to resources related to health and wellness, along with connections to insurance resources.

Registration for the event is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. To register, people can scan the sign-up QR code included in the press kit, email info@1stopcancerneb.edu or visit www.1stopcancerneb.com.

Media note: Because clinical procedures will be taking place at the event on Nov. 1, we cannot allow media into this event. Organizers would be excited to speak with media ahead of the event if desired, or organizers can speak to media on the day of the event outside the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition. Due to privacy regulations, we ask that attendees not be filmed or interviewed during the event.
