Nebraska Medicine Unveils Capacity Optimization Center to Improve Hospital Efficiency and Patient Access

Nebraska Medicine is excited to announce the opening of its new Capacity Optimization Hub, a groundbreaking facility dedicated to streamlining facility transfers, optimizing patient movement across all levels of care. The hub is strategically located and designed with various departments that align with patient progression within the system. This configuration unifies a multidisciplinary team from intake to discharge, thereby accelerating intake and expediting discharges.

This co-located, interdisciplinary team includes:

  • Transfer Center and Bed Planning: Nursing staff coordinates transfer requests and hospital bed placements for all patients needing admission to Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center. A designated physician of the day provides medical oversight for all facility transfers.

  • Resource Management and Staffing Coordination: Centralized scheduling and staffing of nursing care teams ensures optimal daily staffing levels to meet patient demand.

  • Patient Flow Management: Coordinates optimal bed usage and staffing, manages level-of-care transfers within the hospital, and implements surge action plans to accommodate incoming patient needs.

  • Logistics and Support Services: Optimizes room turnover to improve bed availability. Centralized virtual nursing and patient safety assistance enhance bedside nursing care.

  • Discharge SWAT Team: Identifies and implements strategies to expedite discharges and facilitate transfer-back processes. Coordinates discharge transportation.

"Our new Capacity Optimization Hub uses clinical expertise and technology to make more hospital beds available to patients who require complex care and need us the most," says Tabatha Matthias, DO, Medical Director of the Capacity Optimization Hub. "In addition, it gives us the opportunity to transfer patients back to their home hospital when they no longer need the complex care we provide. Our commitment is to provide timely expertise and access, all while being good partners."

"I like to refer to the Capacity Optimization Hub as air traffic control for the hospital," says Jo Clepper, DNP, Director of the Capacity Optimization Hub. "The team will coordinate facility transfers to our hospitals and use their expertise to ensure we have the right patient in the right bed, at the right time."
