HRMC Brings Robotics To The Operating Room

Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) has announced that it has expanded its orthopedic surgical services to include robotic-assisted surgery for total knee and hip replacements.

Kevin Hofer, MD, orthopedic surgeon, who recently joined the HRMC medical staff, trained on and utilized robotics throughout his residency at the University of Kansas in Wichita. Dr. Hofer joins Todd Anderson, MD, to expand orthopedics at HRMC. Both surgeons will utilize robotics for many total knee and hip replacements.

The hospital says that the procedures are just like traditional hip and knee surgeries, but the robotic technology allows doctors to get a more precise implant, which allows for greater comfort and experience after the procedure.

Before surgery, a CT scan generates a 3D model of the joint anatomy, which is then used to help the surgeon personalize and plan the surgical approach of the knee or hip replacement. The robot does not operate on its own or move unless the surgeon prompts it to do so. Optical trackers and cameras are utilized for the surgeon to have an exact awareness of where the hip or knee is in space during the surgery.

“The robot helps us to get implants in a more precise location and assists in making the bony cuts,” Kevin Hofer, MD, orthopedic surgeon, said. “It’s a very good aide to make us better at a procedure we’re already pretty good at. Using the robot, we aim to decrease some of the pain involved with recovery and get people going a bit faster too.”

Erick Larson, president and CEO for HRMC, is excited to bring this type of technology to Huron along with the expansion of general orthopedics. “We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Hofer home to care for his community and to expand our orthopedic services as he joins Dr. Todd Anderson in practice.” He continued, “We continually strive to offer our community the best technology and highest level of care, right here at home.”

To celebrate the addition of new technology, welcome Dr. Kevin Hofer home to Huron, and commemorate the 75th anniversary of HRMC, the public is invited to a reception on Tuesday, September 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the HRMC Physicians Clinic. A special presentation on Mako Smart Robotic total knee and hip replacements will be provided by Dr. Hofer and Dr. Anderson at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
