Essentia Health Fargo Opens Second Electrophysiology Suite

Essentia Health-Fargo is proud to highlight the addition of a state-of-the-art electrophysiology (EP) procedural suite. The $2 million project — which repurposed a general operating room (OR) — allows both of Essentia's Fargo-based electrophysiologists to be in the lab doing procedures simultaneously.

Previously, Essentia Health-Fargo had one EP space which limited access to these critically important procedures. With both spaces now available, wait times will be cut nearly in half, allowing us to better meet the needs of our patients.

"Not only does this new space expand our capacity to perform electrophysiology procedures more efficiently and in a timelier manner, but it also opens up availability for our patients," explained Kaila Jangula, operations manager of the cardiac catheterization (cath) lab. "We listened to the people who rely on Essentia for expert, compassionate and timely care, and I'm so grateful we're able to step up and make this investment on their behalf."

Electrophysiology studies the electrical activities of cells and tissues, particularly focusing on the heart and nervous system. Irregular heart rhythms, also known as arrhythmias, happen when abnormal electrical activity in your heart makes it beat too fast, too slow or unevenly. An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist trained in the diagnosis and treatment of these arrhythmias.

The new EP procedural suite features advanced imaging and mapping technology designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as atrial fibrillation and other complex arrhythmias.

Considered a hybrid space, the suite is also equipped with technology that can be used by interventional neurology. This includes a biplane fluoroscopy system that captures real-time video images of the inside of the body from two different angles.

"People really like the new space; it's shiny, new, brighter," said Jangula. "Learning the new equipment is fun and interesting all at the same time, and this investment supports our mission to provide high-quality, specialized cardiac care close to home."

Since opening in early June, more than 30 patients have been treated in the new procedural space.
