Deaf-Focused Hospital at UNMC on Saturday, April 12
What: The UNMC Student Alliance for People of All Abilities, in partnership with CAHS Consulting, Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH) and Inclusive Communications Access Nebraska (ICAN) will hold a Deaf-Centric Hospital event at UNMC on Saturday, April 12. Interviews and media opportunities are available from 1 to 3 p.m.
Deaf-Centric Hospital is a role-reversal exercise offering medical students the unique opportunity to become "patients" who seek medical attention from Deaf community members who are trained to act as "doctors." By experiencing these barriers firsthand, in a variety of mock scenarios, students build their confidence and enhance techniques specific to working with and improving the quality of health care for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients.
Where: Sorrell Center, 42nd and Emile Streets, Room 1010
What: Participants from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community will act as health providers while medical and health profession students take on the role of patients seeking care in mock health care scenarios
When: Interviews will be available beginning at 1 p.m., and scenarios will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Interview opportunities:
CAHS Consulting director Ronda Rankin and assistant director Tami Richardson-Nelson
Srijta Das, co-chair of the Student Alliance for People of All Abilities
Participants may be available for interviews (interpreters will be available)
