Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Columbus Community Hospital Gives Patients Happier Hearts and Healthier Lungs

Columbus Community Hospital’s cardiopulmonary rehabilitation department helps patients with heart and pulmonary disease recover faster and achieve better health.

“Cardiopulmonary rehab is important to strengthen the heart and lungs after an event or a decrease in health,” said Jennifer Fjell, director of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation department.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs help people with cardiovascular problems, including those who have had heart attacks and coronary bypass surgery. They also help people with pulmonary issues, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory problems.

The hospital’s programs include exercise, education, counseling and support tailored to patients’ abilities, needs and limitations.

“My experience played a huge part in my recovery,” said Sandra Schaben, a past patient of the pulmonary rehabilitation program. “From the consultation to my graduation day, I gained confidence, strength, stamina and knowledge.”

Staff also assist patients with stress and nuclear stress testing and teach them how to eat healthier, maintain their mental well-being, stop smoking and take their medications correctly.

“We have such a great response from our patients,” Fjell said. “They enjoy getting to know their nurses and respiratory therapists and appreciate the friendships they make through the program.”

The hospital’s cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

Programs certified by the AACVPR are recognized as leaders in cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available.

“The staff was extremely helpful, caring and knowledgeable,” said Schaben. “I will use what I learned to continue my recovery.”
