Vance Thompson Vision Welcomes Aaron M. Ricca, MD, and Return of Retina Services

Aaron M. Ricca, MD

VanceThompson Vision is pleased to announce the addition of Aaron M. Ricca, MD, and the return of retina care to their practice. Dr. Aaron M. Ricca is an established, board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal disease. Dr. Ricca will join VanceThompson Vision in January 2027, relocating from Lexington, KY, where he has practiced for the past five years. His arrival marks the return of retina services to the practice, significantly expanding access to specialized care for patients throughout Sioux Falls and the surrounding region.

"Aaron is an incredible surgeon and an even better person. I've known him since our residency days at the University of Iowa, and our doctors and team couldn't be more excited to welcome him to the VanceThompson Vision family and to bring retina care back to the patients and providers who have been asking for it." said Daniel Terveen, MD, an ophthalmologist at VanceThompson Vision.

Dr. Ricca earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Arkansas College of Engineering before attending medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he trained alongside other doctors on the VanceThompson Vision team, followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal disease, also at the University of Iowa. Most recently, Dr. Ricca practiced at Retina Associates of Kentucky in Lexington.

Dr. Ricca has a particular interest in the medical and surgical management of retinal disease related to diabetes, the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults, as well as inherited retinal disease. A former mechanical engineer, he brings a strong appreciation for the advanced imaging technology used to diagnose and manage retinal conditions, along with a commitment to building meaningful, long-term relationships with the patients he treats.

VanceThompson Vision looks forward to once again caring for patients in need of retina services in Sioux Falls. Additional details on scheduling and referrals will be shared in the coming months.
