UNMC Leaders Remember Former Chancellor Dr. Harold M. Maurer

To members of the media who are covering the death of Dr. Harold M. Maurer, former chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (1998 to 2014), here are comments from UNMC Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, and University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, MD (who succeeded Dr. Maurer as UNMC chancellor).

“It was Hal Maurer who first hired me at UNMC. As fellow pediatricians, we shared a deep belief in the importance of improving the health of children and families in Nebraska and beyond. Dr. Maurer was the driving force behind such building projects as the Durham Research Center towers, the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, the Center for Nursing Science and many others during his time as chancellor. He worked with university leaders, state leaders and the philanthropic community not only to transform the UNMC campus but to raise UNMC’s stature nationally and internationally, largely through his focus on building the university’s infrastructure and research profile and by recruiting top faculty. The Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health on campus bears his name, but Hal Maurer left his mark on UNMC across all colleges, institutes and campuses, including his role in developing the first Health Sciences Education Building in Kearney. We are grateful for all he did to shape the UNMC we know today, and Beverly and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.”

His leadership set a solid foundation and was an incredible inspiration to many during his time and my time as UNMC chancellor, and he continues to inspire us today.
