UnityPoint St. Luke's Offers Free Back-to-School Developmental Screenings

As families prepare for the upcoming school year, UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Services’ pediatric therapists are inviting parents to a free Back-to-School Developmental Screening event on Thursday, August 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Services – Hospital Campus, 2800 Pierce Street, Suite 120. No appointment is needed.

Designed for children entering preschool (ages 3-4) and kindergarten (ages 5-7), the event offers free developmental screenings conducted by physical, occupational and speech therapists. Each screening takes approximately five to 10 minutes and evaluates age-appropriate developmental milestones that support learning, play and success in the classroom.

"Starting school is an exciting milestone and these screenings provide families with an opportunity to better understand their child's development before the school year begins," says Jaimie Vacha, physical therapist and manager of outpatient rehabilitation services. "Our goal is to help parents feel confident their child is ready for this next step while identifying any areas where additional support may be beneficial."

During the event, licensed therapists will assess skills such as gross motor development, fine motor coordination, communication and other foundational milestones important for school readiness. Families will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive recommendations if follow-up services are appropriate.

"Many developmental concerns can be addressed more effectively when they're identified early," Vacha says. "This event is a simple way for families to connect with our therapy team, gain valuable insight into their child's development and access resources if needed."
