Sara Becker Receives DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Care

Sara Becker

Columbus Community Hospital recently recognized Sara Becker, RN, with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. She received it for the compassionate care and support she provided to a patient during an unexpected and emotional birth experience.

The patient came to Columbus Community Hospital expecting a delivery similar to her previous two births. Instead, circumstances changed quickly, resulting in an unexpected cesarean section. Shortly after the baby was born, the baby required additional care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

During the uncertainty, Becker remained a calm and compassionate presence, taking time to explain what was happening and offering reassurance throughout the experience.

“She spoke to me with such gentleness and made sure I understood what was happening every step of the way,” the patient wrote in the DAISY Award nomination. “She saw the tears I was trying to hold back and reminded me that it was OK to feel everything I was feeling.”

The patient said Becker’s care extended beyond physical needs. When the baby needed treatment in the NICU, Becker recognized how difficult the separation was and continued to provide comfort and support.

Although the birth experience did not go as the patient had anticipated, she credited Becker’s kindness, empathy and reassurance with helping the family through an incredibly vulnerable time.

The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who demonstrate extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care. Becker’s nomination reflects the meaningful difference nurses can make for patients and families during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

Becker was honored with an award presentation on Oct. 5.
