Prepare Your Teens for a Successful Fall Season
There’s still time to get your students scheduled for an annual wellness exam.
Horizon Health is currently scheduling adolescent wellness checks at its 22 locations across South Dakota. Horizon’s dental locations offer mouth guards to protect your athletes during their sports seasons.
Horizon’s wellness checks include a physical and mental health screening. There are a variety of reasons to schedule a wellness check each year.
They are important for early detection of disease.
They monitor existing health conditions.
They are critical for maintaining overall well-being.
They help patients develop a relationship of trust with their primary care provider, making it easier to discuss health problems with them.
“An annual wellness check helps our providers get to know you and your family,” said Misty Rudebusch, Horizon’s Chief Medical Officer. “Seeing a patient consistently allows us to know them and quickly discover and treat any health issues that arise from year to year.”
An annual wellness exam is particularly important for adolescents. Individuals in this age group have outgrown the diseases of childhood but have yet to face chronic conditions that plague adults. This period is characterized by rapid physical growth, changing hormones and sexual maturity. Three out of four adolescents experience at least one risk behavior such as substance abuse, pregnancy, STDs, depression, eating disorders, suicide, or violence.
Adolescents typically see a health care provider multiple times per year but only 1 in 15 of those visits are for preventative care. This proportion decreases with age. Making annual wellness checks a priority gives your child one more tool to help build a healthy lifestyle.
Add another layer of protection to your child’s upcoming athletic year by purchasing a $10 mouth guard from any of Horizon’s dental locations in Alcester, De Smet, Faith, Howard, Martin, Plankinton, Wessington Springs, and Yankton. Mouth guards not only protect your teeth but also help prevent concussions.
