New Psychiatry Resident Joins Columbus Hospital Team

Dr. Bryndis Grissom

Columbus Community Hospital welcomes Dr. Bryndis Grissom as the newest medical resident at Columbus Psychiatry Clinic. She will be seeing adult patients who have a variety of different mental conditions and challenges, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse and anxiety.

“I like CCH because it feels like home,” Grissom said. “Everyone is super nice, and the hospital staff feels like a family.”

Grissom will be under Dr. Venkata Kolli’s supervision for the next two months. “The presence of a resident will add one more clinician to our clinic,” Kolli said. “Bryndis is in her final year of residency, which means she is near graduation. She is well-trained and is interested in trauma and addictions.”

Grissom attended the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She was a part of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine before attending medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

“It is an honor having a resident in our clinic to serve our community,” said Jenni Buggi, practice manager at Columbus Psychiatry Clinic. “We partner with UNMC’s residency program to support the growth of our future psychiatrists. Dr. Grissom is our fourth four-year resident to complete their training with us.”

Having Grissom as a resident is beneficial for the clinic because she is a professional who can help with the clinic’s already high volumes of behavioral health needs.

“The relationship between UNMC psychiatry and our clinic is a win-win situation,” said Dr. Mark Howerter, chief medical officer at Columbus Community Hospital. “In their final years, UNMC psychiatry residents gain training in rural psychiatric care. This is very important for our state, as rural behavioral health is severely underserved.”

The program with UNMC already helped the psychiatry clinic recruit full-time psychiatrist Emily Royer, who completed a two-month rotation with the clinic last year. “Dr. Kolli has been a great champion for this program,” Howerter said. “Given this experience, we will be looking at other specialty rotations with UNMC in the future.”

Grissom began seeing patients on July 9. She will be in Columbus from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
