Planning Advances for New $12 Million Emergency Department at Essentia Health-Fosston

Kraus-Anderson named general contractor for project that will start this spring; about 75% of subcontractors are from the area

Work will start on a new emergency department at Essentia Health-Fosston this spring following the selection of Kraus-Anderson as the general contractor.

The $12 million project will enhance the patient experience, add more than 5,500 square feet of space and mark another significant investment in Essentia’s campus and the Fosston community.

“We can’t wait to get started on this work, which will be a win for our patients, colleagues and the entire Fosston community, including the surrounding areas, from Erskine to Bagley and Oklee to Clearbrook,” said Mike Curtis, administrator at Essentia Health-Fosston. “Health care is always changing, and these improvements will allow us to continue delivering exceptional care 24/7 to the patients we’re honored to serve.”

Essentia Health and Kraus-Anderson underscored the importance of partnering with local subcontractors to maximize the regional economic impact of this project. Essentia’s initial request for proposal stipulated that local vendors be chosen if they are capable of doing the work. About 75% of the subcontractors are from the area.

“Kraus-Anderson is proud to partner with Essentia Health on the emergency department project in Fosston,” said Pat Weerts, director of operations for Kraus-Anderson. “A strong priority for our team is engaging qualified local subcontractors and suppliers wherever possible. Projects like this do more than improve health care access; they create meaningful economic impact by supporting area businesses, creating jobs and keeping investment within the community. We are committed to working collaboratively with local partners to ensure this project strengthens Fosston both today and for years to come.”

The new ED will grow from 1,100 square feet to 6,700 and will be more user-friendly, fostering a confidential and safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. It will feature rooms specially designed for patients needing behavioral health care. EMS also will benefit from better and more convenient access, including a new ambulance bay.

Work is expected to begin in April and be complete in early summer 2027. In addition to adding space, portions of the campus — both exterior and interior — will receive design updates intended to emphasize the hospital as a healing space.

An official groundbreaking for the start of demolition will be held this spring.
