Nurses Beyond The Bedside Topic Of Aug. 1 Science Café

Gisele Tlusty

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing doctoral students Gisele Tlusty and Andy Lim will present their research related to patients with cancer and cancer prevention at the upcoming UNMC Science Café.

The public is invited to their Science Café presentation at 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Tlusty is interested in developing individualized interventions to help patients maintain their physical activity levels throughout their stem cell transplant treatment journey, and “to not just heal, but regain their sense of overall health,” she said.

Andrew Lim

Tlusty will discuss the physical activity behaviors of patients hospitalized for a stem cell transplant and Lim will discuss grounded theory methodology to construct a theory on how gay, bisexual, and other gender and sexual diverse men approach HPV-related cancer prevention through vaccination and screening.

A PhD candidate in nursing, Tlusty was a staff nurse at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, where she developed and implemented an incentive-based walking program to motivate patients to be physically active during their time in the hospital.

Originally from Indonesia, Lim is a PhD candidate in nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

“I am interested in learning about the social psychological processes by which sexual and gender diverse men experience HPV-related cancer prevention through vaccination and screening,” Lim said.

Lim’s ultimate career goal is to bring an LGBTQ+ health research program to the Midwest area, specifically in Nebraska, and to develop courses on gender and sexuality issues for undergraduate nursing students.

Science Cafés involve a conversation with an expert about current science topics. They are open to everyone. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. Experts give a brief presentation followed by a Q&A period.
