New Program Guides Graduates Toward Nursing Careers

It’s no secret that there are plenty of opportunities in the nursing field today. While that may be true, not everyone who is interested in the field is ready to apply for an entry-level position. That’s where the Workforce Readiness Program comes in.

The three-week program features facilitated career development workshops that focus on self-assessment, career exploration, goal setting, skill building and networking. The goal is to prepare students to earn their certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification and step into an entry-level role at a Nebraska Medicine facility — the first step toward a career in nursing.

Throughout the program, which is held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Nebraska Medicine and UNMC’s Community Wellness Collaborative, students receive an $18-per-hour stipend, transportation, childcare and meals through a collaboration with I Be Black Girl (IBBG).

After completing the program, students may apply for a sponsorship from Blue Cross Blue Shield to earn their CNA or phlebotomist certification.

“This program really puts these students on the right track to enter the nursing field,” says Shanda Ross, director of Community Impact at Nebraska Medicine. “As someone who grew up in North Omaha and knows what potential obstacles lie along the path to a fulfilling career, this is a fantastic opportunity for them to not just find a job, but to find something they truly enjoy and can spend a lifetime doing.”

The first class of students will graduate from the program Monday, Nov. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Wellness Collaborative. Omaha Mayor John Ewing will also be in attendance to congratulate the group. You are invited to attend the ceremony to learn more and speak with those involved.
