Mary Lanning Healthcare Marks Completion of Boiler Plant Project

Mary Lanning Healthcare joined with members of the community and construction communities on Thursday to celebrate the completion of its new boiler plant, a major infrastructure upgrade.

The $7.8 million central steam boiler plant was unveiled by MLH, in partnership with Schneider Electric, with a Hastings-Area Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting. About 50 people attended the event.

The boiler plant not only supports the MLH hospital building but also the adjacent Medical Office Building. Located just across the street from the main hospital, the new plant enhances the system performance. It provides advanced temperature control and water heating capabilities, key to a better experience for staff and patients.

Mark Callahan, MLH Chief Operating Officer, said the original boiler plant had been operating since the 1970s, and good work by the Engineering Department had kept it running well beyond its expected lifetime.

Throughout the project, MLH prioritized community involvement, working with local contractors to ensure the new building matched existing architecture. The project also was carefully designed to ensure zero disruption to patient care during construction. Crew maintained full heating operations while building the new system, even tunneling beneath the street to connect piping without interrupting services.
