Midmark CareFlow™ RTLS Technology: Enhancing Healthcare Safety and Efficiency Through DTB Systems

For healthcare facilities striving to improve both operational efficiency and staff safety, Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) have emerged as a transformative technology. DTB Systems, a system integrator serving healthcare facilities across the Plains states, offers advanced RTLS solutions from Midmark RTLS that go far beyond simple locating—providing comprehensive safety features that directly support frontline healthcare workers.

RTLS technology functions as a kind of "indoor GPS" system for healthcare facilities, enabling real-time locating of equipment, staff, and patients. But the Midmark CareFlow RTLS solution, integrated through Jeron's nurse call systems (also from DTB), offers something particularly valuable: immediate safety support for healthcare workers through wearable emergency alert buttons.

Staff Safety at the Touch of a Button

One of the most compelling features of Midmark RTLS technology is the personal safety button that nurses and other staff members can wear at all times. This seemingly simple device provides instant alerts during emergencies or challenging patient situations. It not only signals for help, it provides the wearer’s location, so assistance can be sent quickly and efficiently.

Kim Barnhardt, MHA, MBA, BS, RN, CPSO, Clinical Consulting and Education Manager at Midmark RTLS, explains the real-world value of this technology from a nurse's perspective: "As an RN, I appreciate the ability to have a button that I have on my person at all times to be able to signal for help without someone knowing what I have done," she says.

The discreet nature of the alert system is particularly important in healthcare settings. "I don't have to worry about fumbling for a phone as I may not even have it on me," says Barnhardt. "It also eliminates yelling for help that would most likely escalate the situation more."

Comprehensive Workflow Integration

Jerry Weiler, Vice President of Business Development at DTB Systems, emphasizes how RTLS technology extends far beyond safety alerts. "RTLS is for a hospital that is really serious about showcasing their efficiency," he explains.

For example, when a patient presses their call button, and a staff member enters the room, it will automatically turn off the call for help and register the staff member in the room. Letting everyone else know the call is being handled also allows the staff to address the issue immediately and not have to deal with canceling the call. This saves steps for the staff and helps report efficiencies.

It can also be set to light a color light outside the room to let other staff members recognize where other team members are at.

Further, RTLS can help nurses quickly find the equipment they need for patient care. “Nurses spend at least 30 minutes per shift just looking for things like IV pumps, bladder scanners or wheelchairs,” Barnhardt explains. “With RTLS, nurses can find these assets by just glancing at a screen.”

Enhanced Patient Experience

The technology's benefits extend to patient satisfaction, as well. Weiler describes a hospital implementation where RTLS transformed the outpatient experience: "They check in the patient and the patient would get their RTLS badge. The info would get sent to the skilled specialist that the patient has arrived at the hospital. The patient already has their badge so that, when it's time for them to be seen, someone can easily go and get them. The patient could then wander freely until it’s time for them to be seen and not just sit in a waiting room. Someone would know exactly where to find them, when ready."

Supporting Staff Retention

Perhaps most importantly, Weiler emphasizes how RTLS technology addresses one of healthcare's most pressing challenges. "This is something that can really help with staff retention by making it easier for a person to do their job," he explains. "In the hospital setting, they take this personally. They want to do a good job for the patient. So we empower them to use the tools to help them take care of the patient with fewer steps and more efficiency."
