MercyOne Western Iowa introduces Military and Veterans Health Care
MercyOne Western Iowa announces the launch of its Military and Veterans Health Care to provide high quality, compassionate and culturally competent care to military service members, veterans and their families.
Through providing this care, MercyOne's health care providers and colleagues are trained to better respond to health concerns and challenges unique to the military community. The program's ongoing training includes education about U.S. military service cultures, as well as common diseases, injuries and exposures experienced by active duty and deployed service members and veterans. The hospital's patient admission process has been updated so military members are identified upon arrival and care is provided with a more in-depth understanding of their needs.
“I am honored to be a part of bringing Military and Veterans Health Care to MercyOne,” said Jesica Hanson, Western Iowa Military and Veterans Health Care Executive Sponsor. “As a proud military family member, I have seen the impact serving has on our veterans. It is vitally important that we give them the honor they deserve by providing them the health care they deserve.”
Military and Veterans Health Care helps colleagues better understand the physical, emotional and spiritual impact of operational deployments on service members and their families.
“There are more than 180,000 veterans living in Iowa,” said Tonja Winekauf, ARNP, MercyOne Singing Hills Family Medicine and Urgent Care and current serving military member. “This number does not include those currently serving their country through the Guard or Reserves. It is vitally important that we recognize the diverse needs that these men, women and their families face. It’s also important to know how their experiences have affected their overall health and created unique health care needs.”
With this enhanced awareness of patients’ military experience, MercyOne positions itself to provide a more comprehensive health care experience for its military community.
