Mayor Ewing to Address Douglas County Maternal and Infant Health Results at Friday Conference

WHAT: Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing, Jr. will speak on improving maternal and infant health outcomes in Omaha and Douglas County at the Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative Annual Summit on Friday.

WHEN: 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday; Mayor Ewing will speak at about 1 p.m.

WHERE: Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., Omaha, Nebraska.

  • Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing, Jr.

  • Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative Medical Director Anne Anderson-Berry, MD, PhD, chief of the UNMC Division of Neonatology  

WHY THIS MATTERS:

  • All 43 of Nebraska’s delivery hospitals are engaged with NPQIC in some capacity for quality improvement.

  • The NPQIC will be announcing which hospitals earned QI Excellence awards.

  • Nebraska has the fifth-highest percentage of Maternity Care Deserts, counties that lack essential obstetric care resources such as hospitals or providers.

  • 61% of Nebraska counties lack a birthing facility.

  • Ten years ago, Nebraska had 54 hospitals, but over the last decade, 11 hospitals have closed their doors to delivery services due to financial constraints and other barriers.

  • The Nebraska Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) considered 93% of pregnancy-related deaths in Nebraska preventable (2024).

  • Nebraska ranks among the worst 15 states for infant mortality rates among babies born to Black/African American mothers.
