Maximizing Patient Experience Through Effective Volunteer and Guest Services
When people visit Columbus Community Hospital, they expect to receive medical care from highly trained professionals. But a patient's experience goes beyond just the medical treatment. CCH's volunteer and guest services department plays a vital role in creating a positive and welcoming environment for patients, families and visitors.
The hospital's dedicated volunteers are the heart of the department, contributing more than 13,000 hours annually and serving in various capacities throughout the hospital. Whether welcoming new patients, providing clerical support or offering pet therapy, volunteers make a real difference in people's lives.
"So much more than the specific tasks performed, volunteers bring life to the health care experience," says Angie Ramaekers, director of volunteer and guest services at CCH. "Volunteer and guest services is proud to do what we do, which allows those who provide direct care for patients to remain focused on what they do best."
The department is constantly innovating to improve the patient experience. Recent additions include:
Patient care ambassador program: Volunteers greet new patients, answer questions and provide a sense of comfort during a potentially stressful time.
VIP Transportation service: This free service removes transportation barriers by providing rides for patients to non-emergency medical appointments within a 50-mile radius.
Expanded services: Meals on Wheels and Safe at Home programs have been added to the department's offerings, promoting healthy living and independence for community members.
CCH recognizes exceptional volunteers who go above and beyond. Vikki Mihulka, who is a member of the nurse corps, volunteers as a patient care ambassador and delivers Meals on Wheels, was recently honored with the 2024 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award.
The department's fundraising efforts — including seven fundraisers held in the 2023-24 fiscal year — generate vital funds for new medical equipment and program advancements at CCH.
The department’s other important contributions include:
The Gift Shop: Provides a variety of gifts and merchandise, with proceeds benefiting the hospital.
Vending services: Offers convenient food and beverage options throughout the hospital.
Pharmacy courier service: Delivers medication to patients at outlying clinics.
Blood drives: Hosts regular blood drives to benefit the community.
Valet parking: Provides complimentary parking for patients and families.
CCH's volunteer and guest services department is committed to making health care accessible, and providing a positive experience for everyone who walks through the hospital doors.
