Lakeview High School Receives Nebraska Career And Technical Education Award
Columbus Community Hospital congratulates Lakeview Junior-Senior High School for recently being named the 2024 Nebraska Career and Technical Education Outstanding Secondary Program Award winner by the Nebraska Department of Education.
This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of career education programs in high schools. The award-winning program initiatives demonstrate the following:
Student achievement in both career and academic arenas.
Innovative instruction based on a state model program of study.
Leadership and personal development through career technical student organizations.
Effective implementation of career guidance and work-based learning.
Alignment to Nebraska's workforce needs and economic priorities.
Community engagement.
The hospital’s Health Science Pathway program is proud to be part of Lakeview’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.
“This award is a testament to the dedication of Lakeview CTE educators to their programs and their students,” said Tracy Long, Health Science Pathway instructor. “The Health Science Pathway program at Lakeview is only in its second year, but shows enormous growth. I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of the unique partnership between CCH and Lakeview, and I am so excited for the future of our program."
The educational program is a collaboration between area high schools, Central Community College and the hospital, allowing students to learn about careers in the medical field. It includes a series of classes that meet requirements from the state of Nebraska and explore various areas of health care.
Students participating in the program receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid training and learn Stop the Bleed ® techniques as part of their course curriculum. Additionally, those who complete the program can become certified nursing assistants (CNAs) through the college.
“The Health Science Pathway program has really taken off in a short amount of time,” said Steve Borer, principal at Lakeview Junior-Senior High School. “Our Health Science Pathway offers courses such as Health Science I, Health Science II, CNA Skills and Health Science III. It has been an amazing community partnership that has provided our students with early health care experiences that we could not provide before this partnership. We are extremely happy with where the program is headed."
Lakeview Junior-Senior High School will accept the award at the NCE Conference this summer.
