Creighton University Residents Start Practice in Innovative Internal Medicine Rural Track at Good Samaritan Hospital
Creighton University School of Medicine is excited to announce that the nation’s first Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Internal Medicine Rural Track program will commence its clinical operations on November 5, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. This milestone follows the program's successful launch during the 2022 recruitment season.
The program is proud to welcome Dr. Abubakar Tauseef as the new program Site Director. A graduate of Creighton’s Internal Medicine program and former R4 Chief Resident, Dr. Tauseef brings invaluable experience and insight to the role. He and his family will be moving to the Kearney community, where he is eager to contribute to local healthcare and build lasting relationships within the community.
“With a deep understanding of the program and the needs of rural medicine, I look forward to fostering an environment that supports our residents while making a positive impact on the health of the Kearney community,” said Dr. Tauseef.
The need for skilled healthcare providers in rural areas is critical, as nearly 80 million Americans live in these regions. Creighton’s Rural Track program addresses this challenge by training residents who are dedicated to serving underserved populations, ensuring access to high-quality medical care for all.
“Our program not only trains residents in internal medicine but immerses them in the complexities of rural healthcare,” said Dr. Brad DeVrieze, Program Director of the Internal Medicine program. “By providing hands-on experience across a variety of specialties, we are preparing them to meet the unique challenges faced by rural communities.”
Residents will engage in extensive clinical rotations, including:
Hospital Medicine
Critical Care
Nephrology
Neurology
Gastroenterology
Cardiology
Hematology/Oncology
Pulmonology
Tele-Infectious Disease
Emergency Medicine
Primary Care
Psychiatry
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Sports Medicine
This diverse curriculum ensures that residents are proficient in internal medicine and well-equipped to tackle a wide array of health issues prevalent in rural settings.
“Training in a rural environment provides residents with a unique perspective on community health needs, fostering a commitment to service and improving healthcare access,” added Dr. DeVrieze. “We are proud to lead the way in rural medical education, inspiring future physicians to embrace careers that can significantly impact their communities.”
Creighton University’s Internal Medicine program is dedicated to cultivating compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals who prioritize service to underserved populations, and keeping our core value of cura personalis, caring for the whole person, at the forefront. The launch of the Rural Track program at Good Samaritan Hospital represents a significant step forward in transforming rural healthcare delivery in the United States.
