Columbus Community Hospital Welcomes Three New Athletic Trainers
Columbus Community Hospital is welcoming three new certified athletic trainers to its sports medicine team this school year.
The hospital’s athletic trainers provide services to the three Columbus high schools and offer outreach to athletic departments at Central Community College and several area high schools. Together, the team provides services for 1,600 area athletes, covering more than 500 athletic events annually.
“It is incredibly important to us to have our schools fully staffed with an athletic trainer to support area athletes,” said Rob Marshall, a certified athletic trainer and director of the Columbus Fieldhouse. “With the addition of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, we knew we needed to expand our team. Being at the school full time allows us to be a constant resource for care on and off the sidelines.
Two of the three new athletic trainers on staff received primary school assignments. Gavin Dowding will provide coverage for the students at Schuyler High School, while Andrew Spencer will provide services for Columbus High School.
Dowding and Spencer are both graduates of Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. Before moving to Columbus, Spencer provided full-time health care services to Grand Island Central Catholic student-athletes.
Michelle Holt is a certified athletic trainer with six years of experience providing coverage in a physician practice setting. She will assist the team by offering additional coverage to all area schools.
“Our team is prepared and looking forward to another year of safe athletics,” Marshall said. “We’re ready to work alongside our student-athletes and their parents to keep everyone safe and ready for competition in the most efficient manner possible.”
