Columbus Community Hospital Voices Concerns Over Medicare Advantage Plans
Columbus Community Hospital (CCH) today joined the Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) in expressing deep concerns about the negative impact of Medicare Advantage (MA) plans on seniors and hospitals across the state.
MA plans, while designed to offer seniors more choices and flexibility, have often resulted in delayed care, increased costs and reduced access to health care services. For rural hospitals such as CCH, the challenges posed by MA plans are particularly acute.
“Complex procedures or patients with unique medical histories often require more time-consuming authorization processes, which can disrupt the continuity of care,” said Chad Van Cleave, CCH’s vice president of financial services. “This makes it challenging for providers to effectively manage patient health.”
The NHA has highlighted several key issues associated with MA plans. These plans can lead to significant delays in necessary treatments and procedures due to prior authorization requirements. Additionally, the plans often have higher out-of-pocket costs for seniors, causing financial hardship.
Patients may also face challenges with finding in-network providers — especially in rural areas. Furthermore, these plans can place a significant financial burden on hospitals — particularly those in rural areas — because of lower reimbursement rates and increased administrative costs.
“CCH has experienced significant delays and denials when providing care for patients who have MA plans, rather than traditional Medicare,” said Van Cleave. “This has led to a rise in medical debt and charity care among patients enrolled in these plans.”
The administrative burden associated with MA plans has diverted resources away from patient care, and the hospital has seen firsthand the negative consequences of these types of plans. Hospital leaders say it's frustrating to see beneficiaries' health care decisions driven by an insurance company, and not by their personal doctor.
The NHA is advocating for several reforms to Medicare Advantage plans. These reforms include streamlining prior authorization processes to reduce the administrative burden, increasing payments to rural hospitals to ensure adequate reimbursement for the care they provide, and strengthening federal oversight to ensure that MA plans are operating as intended.
Columbus Community Hospital joins the NHA in urging seniors to carefully consider their options before enrolling in or switching to an MA plan. Patients should consult with their health care providers to determine the best plan for their individual needs.
