Columbus Community Hospital CEO Receives National Recognition

Becker's Hospital Review has recognized Mike Hansen, president and CEO of Columbus Community Hospital, as one of the "80 rural hospital CEOs to know."

Hansen has led the hospital for the past 14 years and understands its critical role in keeping the community safe and healthy.

"While many rural hospitals are facing numerous challenges, our facility continues to thrive and succeed through the leadership of Mike Hansen," said Julie Haney, hospital board vice chair. "The key to Mike's leadership is how he uses his power, not for personal gain, but for the good of his staff, the hospital and the communities they serve. His strategic thinking and strong leadership have led to the hospital's success and recognition as one of the top leaders of rural hospitals in the U.S."

On a typical day, Hansen could be handling operational issues at the hospital, looking at strategic ideas with the board or working with community stakeholders. But above all, his focus remains on providing high-quality patient care and maintaining the strong organizational culture he has built.

"For the last 12 years, I have worked closely with Mike on several initiatives to enhance patient care in Columbus," said Dr. Mark Howerter, emergency room physician director at the hospital. "Mike has always been very supportive of our medical staff. He brings a great vision to how we can develop as a health care community."

Despite the ever-changing health care environment, Hansen continues to grow the hospital's outreach and services. The organization recently opened its new cardiac catheterization lab, began construction on the Columbus Fieldhouse and added new equipment and technology.

"Under his leadership, the hospital has grown in a very responsible and methodical fashion," Howerter said. "Having said that, it seems that every year, there have been noticeable improvements to the hospital. Those accomplishments include a new emergency department; large-scale renovations of radiology, surgery, obstetrics, our conference center and our outpatient facilities; and a broader range of medical services to our community. All these aspects add to Mike's legacy as CEO of our hospital."
