Children’s Minnesota Earns Re-Verification As A Level I Children’s Surgery Center By The American College Of Surgeons

Children’s Minnesota is pleased to announce it has been re-verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program. Level I is the highest distinction given by the ACS to health systems that perform complex surgical procedures on unborn babies, newborns, children and teens. The organization’s current re-verification is valid until November 2025, and applies to Children's Minnesota hospital in Minneapolis and outpatient surgery center in Minnetonka. In 2022, more than 20,000 procedures were performed at Children’s Minnesota.

“Re-verification as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center is a testament to the comprehensive team of kid experts at Children’s Minnesota, and the expansive surgical resources we have to care for our patients – no matter how complex the procedure is,” said Dr. Marc Gorelick, president and CEO of Children’s Minnesota. “Our pediatric surgical team, just like our entire organization, holds itself to a high standard to own outcomes – earning re-verification again is validation of this core value.”

Children’s Minnesota had to meet the ACS’s rigorous quality and safety criteria before it could be re-verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center. The standards include staffing, training, and facility infrastructure protocols that ensure the organization can appropriately care for patients throughout the perioperative process through 30-days post-surgery.

The ACS first verified Children’s Minnesota as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center in 2018. That made the organization the first hospital system in the state to earn this distinction. The system is now one of only three Level I Children’s Surgery Center in Minnesota.
