Brookings Hospital Earns Spot on Newsweek’s America’s Best-In-State Hospitals List Once Again

For the second consecutive year, Brookings Hospital has been recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list was announced on Oct. 23 and can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website

Brookings Hospital was again recognized with a Patient Experience Award. The award denotes hospitals with outstanding performance in patient experience, highlighting their dedication to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. To receive the additional recognition, hospitals must have all 10 Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) measures rated within the top 40%. At least three of the 10 HCAHPS measures must be rated in the top 15%, highlighting areas of outstanding achievement. Additionally, four or more measures must be ranked in the top 10%, reaching the 90th percentile or higher, underscoring the hospital’s commitment to excellence in critical performance areas.

The America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2025 ranking identifies the top hospitals at the state level. Hospitals from all US states were eligible for the ranking and included in the nationwide survey. Four data sources were used for the evaluation.

  • Hospital Quality Metrics: data from the Center for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS), the AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals Database and accreditation data from various sources were considered. Hospitals had to report in at least three CMS categories (mortality, safety, readmission, experience, timely & effective care), one of which had to be either mortality or safety.

  • Nationwide Online Survey: medical professionals (doctors, hospital managers and healthcare workers) were asked to recommend the best hospitals (in and out of state) based on their expertise. Participants were asked to rate recommended hospitals in several dimensions, including quality of care, staffing, patient counseling, accommodations and amenities. Recommendations for own hospital/employer were not allowed.

  • Patient Experience: results from the 10 HCAHPS measures which ask patients to rate their experience, including cleanliness and quietness of the hospital, communication with nurses/doctors and staff responsiveness, care transition, medicine communication and discharge information.

  • PROMS Implementation Survey: used to account for the increasing importance of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and how hospitals use that data to improve patient care.

This spring Brookings Health System was named a Top 20 Rural Community Hospital for the seventh time by the National Rural Health Association and a World’s Best Hospital by Newsweek and Statista Inc.
