AFSP South Dakota Chapter and Sanford Health Partner to Bring Soul Shop™ for Leaders Workshop
Join the AFSP South Dakota Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the nation’s leading suicide prevention organization and Sanford Health, from 8:30 to 4:30 on Friday, November 1st at the Sanford Center in Sioux Falls for a Soul Shop™ for Leaders Training. Soul Shop™ for Leaders is for pastors, priests, youth directors, educators, counselors, therapists, faith community nurses, lay leaders, and any ministry leader. It is for anyone who feels CALLED to respond to suicidal desperation. Sanford Health, the provider of the educational activity, has worked together with a joint provider, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to plan, implement, and evaluate the conference. AFSP is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. “Given that 6% of adults and 17% of adolescents are thinking about suicide at any given time and 50% of any congregation is impacted by suicide in some form, this is an issue that churches cannot avoid. Communities of faith have both a theological obligation and a call by God to face this challenge head-on, equipping members to do the same.” Michelle Snyder, Soul Shop Executive Director.
Soul Shop™ workshops address the primary obstacles of dealing with suicide, such as societal discrimination, fear, and shame; statistics/facts about suicide; and how ministries can create a supportive environment while shifting the culture around how people deal with this subject and one another. Soul Shop™ Movement has trained thousands nationally and internationally in suicide awareness and has facilitated the development of suicide prevention plans within numerous community teams.
