Athletic Training Services Expand Regional Reach and Impact
Columbus Community Hospital continues to grow its athletic training services, supporting student-athletes and community partners across nearly 2,500 square miles. During fiscal year 2024-25, the department provided sports medicine coverage for close to 6,700 athletes, including those at 14 high schools and Central Community College. Athletic trainers also worked alongside local law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel to strengthen community health and safety.
The program has expanded significantly over the past decade, adding staff and services to meet the needs of schools and families. Today, the athletic training team includes 14 certified professionals dedicated to providing daily on-site support at practices, games and training facilities. Collectively, they ensure athletes receive timely care, while also guiding parents and coaches through injury prevention and recovery.
CCH athletic trainers not only serve locally, but they also help shape the profession at state, district and national levels. Members of CCH’s team hold leadership roles within the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers’ Association, serve as national and district chairs, and contribute to professional committees. Their involvement highlights the department’s commitment to advancing standards of care well beyond Columbus.
One of the hallmarks of the program is its close integration with CCH surgeons, therapists and providers. Athletic trainers play a central role in coordinating care when an athlete is injured, ensuring smooth transitions between treatment, therapy and recovery. They are a trusted resource for students, parents and school staff alike.
Looking ahead, CCH will host the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers’ Association annual conference in June 2026, underscoring the hospital’s leadership role in athletic training. In preparation, the hospital recognizes its many school partners whose collaboration makes safe and effective athletic care possible.
Athletic trainers at CCH do more than treat injuries — they serve as trusted health resources, mentors and advocates for students. Their presence helps reduce risks, keeps athletes safe on the field and ensures families have access to the highest quality care. Through this work, CCH continues its mission to improve the health and wellness of the communities it serves, building partnerships that benefit not only athletes, but entire school systems and families across the region.
