2024 Hospital Heroes: The Ambulance Crew at Waverly Health Center

Since 2007, IHA’s Hospital Heroes program has celebrated employees who have acted courageously in a moment’s crisis or selflessly served their hospitals and communities throughout their careers. In October, IHA presented 11 Hospital Heroes awards at its annual meeting.

On Dec. 10, 2023, a Wartburg College baseball player faced a life-threatening cardiac arrest at home. Thanks to the swift and expert response of Waverly’s first responders, including the Waverly Police Department and Waverly Health Center’s ambulance crew, his life was saved.

Arriving within just two minutes, these selfless professionals took immediate action, providing the lifesaving care that allowed him to recover fully and return to his senior baseball season. Their quick thinking, diligent training and teamwork made a difference. Humble in their service, these heroes prefer to stay out of the spotlight, yet their impact on the community is immeasurable. Wartburg College and the entire Waverly community are grateful for their courage and dedication.

By honoring these first responders, IHA recognizes their vital role in keeping their community safe and celebrates the life they saved that day.
