How Culture Influences Family Understanding of the Health Care System

All health care providers who care for pediatric patients with chronic conditions are encouraged to join us. We will offer sessions addressing patients' and families' diverse cultures, languages and belief systems. We will explore how to provide support within the hospital and community settings.

Objectives

  1. Describe the basics of narrative medicine and how its practice can lead to increased trust and outcomes for all patient populations.

  2. Utilize narrative medicine strategies to highlight patient stories from all cultures.

  3. Describe new insights regarding healthcare access for LEP (Limited English Proficiency) populations.

  4. Develop strategies for providing culturally responsive care to patients and families.

  5. Assess awareness of cultural beliefs, values, and fears that shape pediatric palliative care experiences.

  6. Illustrate culturally responsive strategies that reduce fear, promote emotional safety, and strengthen trust within the medical system.
