Vance Thompson Vision Adds Doctors, Expands Services

Jed Assam

Vance Thompson Vision is once again living up to its world-class reputation. This time by adding two physicians to expand the services offered to patients in the Sioux Falls area.

In August, board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologists Jed Assam and Zachary Keenum will join the practice’s surgical team. Dr. Assam is a specialist in retina care while Dr. Keenum brings oculoplastics expertise to Vance Thompson Vision.

As an expert in the retina, Dr. Assam will look after patients who need treatment for macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and all other conditions that decrease retinal function. Every part of the eye is important for clear vision; however, a healthy retina is particularly critical as it converts light into the signal that the brain interprets to create the images we see.

“The ophthalmology field is always advancing, and retina studies are pushing into new discoveries almost daily. It’s exciting to be able to offer premier retina care and advance its findings in my hometown,” said Dr. Assam.

Dr. Keenum further diversifies Vance Thompson’s surgical team with his specialization in oculoplastics. Oculoplastics is most commonly known for its ability to lift droopy eyelids so that they don’t impede vision and to help repair injuries to the area around the eye. However, because the discipline combines the technology of ophthalmology with the precision of plastic surgery, Dr. Keenum can also restore the eyebrows, forehead, cheeks, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and lacrimal (tear) system.

“I am really looking forward to getting established in Sioux Falls,” said Dr. Keenum. “Oculoplastics is experiencing a lot of interest from patients right now, and Vance Thompson Vision will build upon its long history and trust with these expanded, more robust services.”

Plans are still being finalized for Assam and Keenum’s start dates following completion of their advanced training, but it’s clear that both doctors are welcome additions to the team.

“We are counting down the days until Dr. Keenum and Dr. Assam join us,” said Dr. Vance Thompson, ophthalmologist and practice founder. “We’re doctors, which means we take great pride in being able to care for our patients and meet their most pressing needs. With these new and expanded services, we can now care for every aspect of your eyes, from the outside all the way to the back. It’s very satisfying to be able to say that!”

Vance Thompson Vision is committed to achieving the clearest vision possible for every patient. With the addition of retina care and expansion of oculoplastics, we’re serving our community and accomplishing that goal in even more ways.
