UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Foundation Unveils Two New Pediatric Themed Rooms With Local Businesses

UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Foundation celebrated the continuation and expansion of the Themed Pediatric Patient Room Project, which has been successfully bringing joy, comfort and healing to Siouxland pediatric patients since its inception in 2015. With the support of the latest sponsors, C.W. Suter and Wilson Trailer, two new rooms were unveiled on the hospital floor. The goal of these rooms is to lessen pain and anxiety by providing children with an immersive and engaging hospital experience.

“Hospital stays can be challenging for children, regardless of age,” says Kari Winklepleck, president of St. Luke’s Foundation. “The separation from home, coupled with the stress and disruption to their routine, can impede their normal development and well-being. By incorporating therapeutic play into their recovery journey, we effectively reduce anxiety and fears from admission to discharge.”

The newly renovated rooms each have a playful theme that points back to the businesses they are sponsored by.

“It is our privilege to positively impact the lives of children in our community," says John Baker, CEO and president of C.W. Suter. “Through our space-themed room, we hope to ignite their imagination and inspire them to reach for the stars.”

“We are proud to be part of the Themed Pediatric Patient Room Project and contribute to the well-being of children during their hospital stay,” says Tiffany (Persinger) Hunt, Vice President of Operations at Wilson Trailer. Their sponsored room is farm-themed and designed to bring the joys of rural life to pediatric patients, offering a comforting and engaging environment.

Sponsorship of a pediatric-themed patient room includes a complete transformation into a colorful and stimulating environment that promotes recovery. The designs encompass elements such as paint, flooring, wall decals and/or murals/pictures, theme-relevant furniture/fixtures adhering to infection control standards, and at least one interactive element designed to encourage patients to be active and mobile.

St. Luke’s Foundation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the themed rooms' completion with both Siouxland Chamber of Commerce and South Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. The event provided an opportunity for sponsors, community members and hospital team members to get a first look at the space.
