UnityPoint Clinic Welcomes Board-Certified General Surgeon
Dr. Al Khadem
UnityPoint Clinic General Surgery – Sioux City is excited to welcome board-certified general surgeon Mai Al Khadem, MD to its team of providers. She combines surgical precision with compassionate communication, ensuring patients feel informed, supported and confident throughout every step of their surgical journey.
"My goal is to achieve the best possible outcomes while making each patient feel heard, respected, and cared for," says Dr. Al Khadem. She provides a wide range of general surgery services, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, appendectomy, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), hernia repair, soft tissue excision, breast surgery, colorectal surgery, endoscopy and colonoscopy. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Dr. Al Khadem earned her medical degree from Dubai Medical University and completed her internship and residency at MedStar Health – Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University Hospital. During residency, she was recognized with the Surgical Critical Care Award at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Prior to residency, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital focusing on Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery where she authored numerous publications. She subsequently competed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
"I was drawn to general surgery because of the precision, complexity and opportunity to make a direct impact on patients’ health and recovery," says Dr. Al Khadem. She is passionate about guiding patients through both urgent and planned surgical care with clarity, compassion and expertise.
Dr. Al Khadem’s approach to care is rooted in trust, open communication and respect. She takes time to explain conditions and treatment options clearly, helping patients feel comfortable asking questions and actively participating in their care decisions. Patients often describe her as attentive, thorough and approachable.
