Avera Health has named former behavioral health assistant Vice President Steve Lindquist as the leader of a new project aimed at combating the opioid epidemic through a one-year planning grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). Lindquist served at the helm of the Avera Behavioral Health Center for nearly 20 years. Previously, he was director of Mental Health for the State of South Dakota, as well as administrator of the George S. Mickelson Center for the Neurosciences. Lindquist has served on state task forces for managed care, telemedicine, and behavioral health and is a past president of the South Dakota Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Avera eCARE, including telemedicine and monitoring services for ICU, Emergency, Pharmacy, Senior Care, Correctional Health, Specialty Clinic, Behavioral Health, Hospitalist and School Health, is celebrating 25 years in operation. Avera began telemedicine with a pilot project in 1993, connecting specialists in Sioux Falls to rural community partner facilities. In 2004, Avera expanded its telemedicine offerings to include eCARE ICU, its first 24-hour, on-demand service.

Avera Health supported Drug Take-Back Day Saturday, October 28, by accepting unused or expired prescription medications including opioids in its ongoing effort to help combat a national opioid abuse and overdose epidemic. Medications were accepted with no questions asked.

Keri Nebelsick, OD, has joined Avera Medical Group Optometry in Mitchell. Nebelsick is originally from Canistota and is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University. She received her Doctor of Optometry at Illinois College of Optometry and completed her residency at the Indiana University School of Optometry. Her professional experience includes work in Stillwater, MN and Sioux Falls, SD.
