Summertime is a Great Time to be Active

Men play an important role in their families' lives. It's important that they take care of themselves too.

The sun is out, the golf course is calling, and those fish aren’t going to catch themselves.

June is men’s health month – a great time to get out of the house and be active.

“Summer is a great time to get outside and get active taking care of the yard, going for walks, and improving your golf swing,” said Misty Rudebusch, Horizon’s Chief Medical Officer. “It’s also a great time to assess your health and catch up on needed visits to your primary care provider.”

Men face a variety of threats to their health – the top two being cancer and heart disease. Others include injury, diabetes, lung disease and stroke. Making healthy life choices can reduce the risk of some of these ailments.

Simple safety tips include wearing a seatbelt when driving or a helmet when cruising on your motorcycle. A balanced diet is also a good idea with five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Staying hydrated is a good idea overall and even more so when you’re spending time in the hot sun. Work toward the 10,000 steps goal. It builds muscle and gets the blood moving through your heart muscle. Exercise is good for your mental as well as physical health.

Here are some other tips to keep your health on track so you can enjoy all the games, getaways and adventures summer has to offer.

  • Use a safety ladder when reaching high places and safety goggles when working with power tools

  • Practice safe sex

  • Wear sunscreen

  • Get the health screenings and vaccinations for your age

  • Manage your weight and cholesterol – men can gain weight as they age. This could stem from a larger health problem if the weight is mostly in the belly.

  • Reach out if you are feeling depressed or have increased anxiety. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Contact your Horizon Health primary care provider to help you manage a chronic condition. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen your provider, schedule an appointment today for a wellness check.

Men play an important role our lives. It’s important that they care for their health so they can continue to care for those they love.
