Sanford Health to Present How Telemedicine and AI Are Aiding Rural Communities at National Health Care Conference

Jeremy Cauwels, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Sanford Health

Jeremy Cauwels, M.D., chief medical officer at Sanford Health, will join a keynote discussion at Reuters Digital Health Summit May 12, in Nashville, Tenn., which brings together top-level executives, innovators and decision-makers from health systems across the country focused on shaping the future of health care.

Cauwels will speak during a fireside chat, Explore how Telemedicine and Ambient AI can Expand Access to Care in Rural and Underserved Communities, moderated by Janet Guptil, founder and CEO of Scottsdale Institute.

“I am excited to discuss how Sanford Health is harnessing virtual care and ambient AI technologies to transform the way we deliver care in America’s heartland,” said Cauwels. “I’m proud of the way our teams are embracing innovation to meet our patients where they’re at. We have so many stories to share that demonstrate how virtual care and new AI tools are improving the patient experience, reducing clinician burnout and expanding access across our rural footprint.”

Cauwels will discuss Sanford’s virtual care initiative, including how the recently opened Sanford Virtual Care Center is serving as a premier training ground for the next generation of clinicians. In addition, Cauwels will share how Sanford is utilizing new AI-enabled software that securely records a physician’s conversation with a patient during a visit and transcribes notes in the electronic medical record in real-time. 90% of the Sanford clinicians who have utilized this technology reported higher job satisfaction, 95% reported reduced cognitive burden and 100% indicated they’d be disappointed if they couldn’t use the AI documentation tool.

Born in South Dakota and raised in northwest Iowa, Cauwels has bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology from the University of Northern Iowa and a medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He completed his residency and a chief resident year at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Society of Hospital Medicine.
