South Dakota State Medical Association Member Spotlight
Megan Smith, MD
Family Medicine, Burke Medical Clinic
Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, USD SSOM

Why I chose my specialty:
Family medicine allows me to develop lifelong relationships with multiple generations in the same family. I practice where I grew up, and now get to care for the people who helped raise me and encourage me, as I became a physician. The kind of connection to people and place a rural family practice gives me creates deep purpose in my work. And of course I get to share and serve beyond my office, too, through things like public health education, coaching youth sports, and senior living projects. We build our lives together here, and I get to be in the middle of all of it tending to patients.
Why I’m a member of the SDSMA:
Rural family medicine can be isolating. The SDSMA is a great way to build relationships with other physicians. I see daily what access to quality healthcare means to my community, and I will never turn away from advocating for fairer systems. SDSMA is the best way join my voice with other physicians to speak for our profession and our patients.
