The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO), through its LifeCircle South Dakota initiative, is reminding long-term care facilities of updated state administrative rules requiring Advance Directive education as part of staff orientation and annual training.
Under South Dakota Administrative Rule 44:73:04:05, nursing facilities must provide training on Advance Directives to healthcare personnel within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter. Staff determined to have no contact with residents are exempt from this specific training requirement.
To help facilities meet these requirements, SDAHO and LifeCircle South Dakota have developed a free, 13-minute Advance Directive training video featuring Melissa Schilousky, MSN, FNP-C, CNP, with Avera Medical Group Palliative Medicine.
The training covers the importance of advance care planning, the purpose and elements of Advance Directives, and the types of Advance Directives available in South Dakota.
Training Resources Available
Facilities are encouraged to incorporate this resource into their employee orientation and annual education programs. The training includes a pre-test, post-test, answer key and educational slides to support staff learning.
By providing accessible education and practical resources, SDAHO LifeCircle- South Dakota’s Hospice and Palliative Care Network continues to support long-term care professionals in honoring residents’ healthcare wishes and strengthening person-centered care.
