Saving Lives Step-by-Step: Sioux Falls Heart Walk Inspires Bystanders to Become Lifesavers

American Heart Association signature event drives CPR awareness and community preparedness

WHAT: The American Heart Association and hundreds of community members will walk at the Sioux Falls Heart Walk.

WHO: Local businesses and American Heart Association volunteers, as well as heart disease and stroke survivors will participate. This year’s Sioux Falls Heart Walk is sponsored by First Premier Bank, PREMIER Bankcard, Avera Heart Hospital, Sanford Health, Lawrence & Schiller, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital Sioux Falls, SDTC, KELO, Argus Leader Media and Midco.

Event interviews are available with featured survivors Jim Dover, Jordan Hout, and Eloise Hora and family.

WHERE: The Sioux Falls Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls. The event opens at 8 a.m., opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:15 a.m.

WHY:  Nine out of ten people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die. In most of those cases, bystander CPR was not performed.  That is why the American Heart Association is broadening efforts to drive CPR education, awareness and community initiatives through the Heart Walk, the Association’s largest community facing initiative. Through fundraising, community education and corporate engagement, the Heart Walk aims to enhance CPR training accessibility, bolster bystander preparedness, increase funding for vital research, and save and improve lives from cardiovascular diseases, the number one killer in South Dakota.

HOW: Participants can register for the Heart Walk at [LINK]. From there, they can create a fundraising page, download the Heart Walk mobile app, invite family and friends to participate and take part in the Heart Walk CPR Digital Experience to learn Hands-Only CPR in 90 seconds.

MORE: By participating and donating to the Sioux Falls Heart Walk, participants are supporting the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association and safeguarding that fewer people die from stroke and heart disease. Every walker who joins, every dollar donated, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more research, and more lifesaving moments for everyone. I walk to save lives. You can, too.
