Power of Preventive Care Showcased at Ray of Hope Event
South Dakota’s Center for the Prevention of Child Prevent will highlight the power of primary prevention and launch the Businesses for Babies initiative at the upcoming Ray of Hope Event, to be held April 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Starlite Room at the Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls.
Primary prevention of child maltreatment connects families to resources and supports in their community. The aim of primary prevention is to prevent child maltreatment before it happens. Examples of primary prevention can include parenting education, affordable-quality childcare, economic supports, and family-forward workplace policies.

Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment hosts the event during child abuse prevention month, typically recognized in April. “This event will be the launch of a Businesses for Babies awareness campaign, which highlights South Dakota businesses that support families through family-forward policies,” said Chrissie Young, Director of CPCM. “In South Dakota, 72.5% of all children under the age of 6 have all available parents in the labor force, meaning businesses with family-forward policies are leaders in preventing child abuse and neglect in our state.”
Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment was formed in 2017 as a result of Jolene’s Law Taskforce to develop sustainable solutions to reduce all forms of child maltreatment in South Dakota, beginning with child sexual abuse.
