Prairie Lakes Healthcare System Performs First Leadless Pacemaker Procedure, Expanding Cardiac Care Options

Prairie Lakes Healthcare System (PLHS), a division of Sanford Health, has successfully implanted its first leadless pacemaker, marking a significant advancement in cardiac care for patients in the region.

The procedure was performed by Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Joseph Elliott, along with Jacklyn Karli, DNP, and the Prairie Lakes Cath Lab team. This milestone introduces a new, minimally invasive option for patients who require a pacemaker.

Unlike traditional pacemakers, which require leads (wires) and a surgical pocket under the skin, leadless pacemakers are small, self-contained devices implanted directly into the heart. This innovative approach eliminates the need for leads, reducing potential complications and allowing for a quicker recovery.

“This technology represents an exciting step forward in how we care for patients with heart rhythm conditions,” said Dr. Elliott. “We’re proud to offer this level of cardiac care right here in our community.”

The successful implantation reflects Prairie Lakes’ continued commitment to bringing advanced medical technology and specialized care closer to home.

In addition to Dr. Joseph Elliott and Jacklyn Karli, DNP, the clinician team includes Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Ravi Kalaga and Kahley Meyer, PA-C, who all work collaboratively to provide comprehensive cardiovascular care to patients across the region.
