Mary Lanning Healthcare Laboratory Earns Reaccreditation

The Mary Lanning Healthcare Laboratory recently received reaccreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Recognized for its rigorous standards, CAP accreditation elevates quality and helps laboratories contribute to improved patient outcomes.

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s quality control, testing protocols and

compliance with accreditation standards. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management. These reviews help verify the laboratory’s operational performance and reflect the most recent best practices.

Dr. Whitney Wedel, Laboratory Medical Director, said she is honored and pleased by the reaccreditation.

“Not all labs are CAP-accredited,” she said. “The process truly helps ensure that our lab is safe and patient-focused.”

According to the CAP website, there are 36 other labs in Nebraska accredited by CAP.

Terri Brown, MHA MLS(ASCP), MLH Laboratory Director, said the reaccreditation shows the efforts of the entire department staff.

“Our laboratory operates 24/7 every day,” Brown said. “It takes the tireless work of our section lead scientists, as well as dozens of additional support technicians, phlebotomists and department assistants to keep our laboratory performance safe and of high quality. The CAP Accreditation Program demands focus on all of these elements, making our services highly reliable.”
