MercyOne To Award Annual Dr. George Spellman Award To Dr. Joseph Liewer At MercyOne Gala

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center Foundation is excited to announce Dr. Joseph Liewer as the 2022 recipient of the Dr. George G. Spellman Annual Service Award.

Named after the late Dr. George Spellman, a longtime Sioux City physician, the award recognizes community members or groups who generously, with their time, talent and treasure, exemplify the values of MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center.

For over 30 years, Dr. Liewer, a native of Osmond, Nebraska, has served the Siouxland community with compassion and dedication as an emergency room physician at MercyOne. “Dr. Liewer has dedicated his career to improving the quality of life for those in the Siouxland community and consistently provides exceptional personalized care to our patients and lives out the mission of MercyOne,” said Lea Greathouse, MercyOne Western Iowa vice president of Mission, marketing and support services. “I can’t think of a more worthy recipient of the Spellman Award and want to offer Dr. Liewer a sincere congratulations for this honor.”

Dr. Liewer graduated from Briar Cliff University with a degree in biology and chemistry. He then attended medical school at the University of Nebraska College of medicine and graduated in 1992. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is also a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

“I am humbled and honored to be considered and chosen to receive this year’s Spellman Award,” said Dr. Liewer. “Dr. Spellman embodied service to the community. I aspire to also provide that same level of care to those in need.”

Dr. Liewer will be presented with the Spellman Award on November 5, 2022, at MercyOne’s 2022 Gala: “Bow Ties and Diamonds”.

“Since the inception of the MercyOne Fall Gala more than 25 years ago, it has raised more than $5 million to improve health care for Siouxland,” said Greathouse. “I am proud of our fabulous committee who spend months preparing for the event, and of our generous community for their presence and financial support at this cherished, elegant and entertaining Siouxland event.”
