Iowa Hospitals Provided $1.4 Billion in Community Benefits in 2025
Iowa hospitals and health systems provided more than $1.4 billion in community benefits in 2025 while serving more than 3.6 million patient encounters, according to a new report released by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA).
The report underscores the vital role Iowa hospitals play beyond delivering healthcare, highlighting their far-reaching impact on local communities and the state’s economy. From charity care and community health programs to workforce development and economic investment, Iowa hospitals remain essential partners in improving the health and well-being of Iowans.
In addition to delivering essential healthcare services, Iowa hospitals remained a powerful economic driver across the state. In 2025, Iowa hospitals:
Employed 146,616 Iowans
Paid $10.4 billion in salaries and wages
Generated $24.8 billion in hospital-related economic activity
These contributions support local businesses, strengthen communities, and help drive economic growth throughout the state.

Community health screenings and immunization programs
Behavioral and mental health support services
Nutrition education and wellness initiatives
Transportation assistance to help patients access care
The report is based on data from the American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and community benefit information reported directly by Iowa hospitals.
