Hospital Receives Grant For Recycled Materials In Fieldhouse Project

The Columbus Community Hospital Foundation recently received a $106,422 grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy’s (NDEE) Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program to support the hospital’s fieldhouse project.

The grant helps organizations fund projects that reduce litter and waste and promote recycling in Nebraska. The hospital qualified for the grant because it plans to utilize a mix of sand and recycled rubber for the fieldhouse’s turf field.

“We are very grateful for the funding from the NDEE’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program,” said Mike Hansen, president and CEO of Columbus Community Hospital. “Through the financial support of the grant, community sponsors and our foundation, we are well on our way to funding our new fieldhouse — a wellness initiative project that has been our board’s goal for many years.”

The hospital’s mission is to improve the health of the communities it serves. By incorporating recycled materials into the fieldhouse project, it is doing its part to reduce the amount of waste across the state.

“It’s been a wonderful learning experience to visit with representatives from our state and see what recycled products are available for the fieldhouse,” said Cori Fullner, executive director of the foundation. “With a facility this size, we can use several recyclables inside and outside the facility.”

The 240,000-square-foot structure, north of the Columbus Wellness Center near 31st Street and 41st Avenue in Columbus, will include a 101,500-square-foot field turf area, batting cages, mini putting greens, tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts and volleyball courts. It will also have a suspended walking track, racquetball, a cycle studio and spaces for personalized fitness, circuit training and cardio. Premier Physical Therapy and the Columbus Sports Performance Center will operate in the fieldhouse.

The project’s construction crews are on track to complete the fieldhouse by the end of 2023, and the facility should open in 2024.
