Good Samaritan Plants 100 Trees On Arbor Day To Celebrate The Hospital’s 100th Birthday

CHI Health Good Samaritan, in partnership with the Lloyd H. Dean Institute for Humankindness and Health Justice, is celebrating the hospital’s 100th birthday by planting 100 trees this Arbor Day.

The community is invited to a blessing of the seedlings at 12:30 pm on Friday, April 26 in the hospital’s Healing Garden. As part of the ‘Planting the Seeds of Kindness’ ceremony, an honorary tree will be planted in the garden located between the hospital’s West Tower and Cancer Center near Parking Lot C. Volunteers, including hospital staff and area church partners, will plant the remaining seedlings throughout Kearney and surrounding communities.

“Just as trees’ continued presence in our communities brings life and healing to all who pass their way, so Good Samaritan Hospital has existed to do the very same. As we share these trees to be planted out and around the Kearney region, we hope they represent the continued healing presence of our hospital for generations to come,” says Adie Johnson, Pastoral Care, Good Samaritan.

Good Samaritan encourages all to celebrate Arbor Day 2024 by planting a tree.

More about Good Samaritan’s 100th Birthday

On July 23, 1924, CHI Health Good Samaritan officially opened its doors…and those doors haven’t closed since. Much has changed, but the hospital’s compassion for the sick and dedication to our region remains the same. Transformed from a community hospital into a thriving regional referral center, it all started with pioneering Kearneyites, devoted Sisters and men and women answering the call to care.

This year, Good Samaritan will celebrate its 100th birthday and that spirit of innovation that’s been with them from the beginning. Each month leading up to the big birthday, Good Samaritan will sponsor events that honor their staff and community that have been so integral to their success. Join Good Samaritan as they celebrate 100 Years: Honoring our legacy, innovating the future.

Arbor Day, the nation’s tree planting holiday, celebrated on the last Friday in April began in 1872. It is marked by the planting of trees and emphasizes caring for them as a way to sustainably protect our planet’s natural resources. Trees clean our air and water, provide habitat for wildlife, connect communities, and support our health and well-being.
