First Baby of the New Year to Be Honored

The Mary Lanning Healthcare Family Care Center team is ready to help bring the first baby of 2026 into the world.

Donna Munsell, Director of the Family Care Center, said she and her staff are excited to kick off another busy year, welcoming new babies and their families. Munsell said that MLH will have delivered 917 infants by the end of the year.

Some other statistics of note are 54 successful Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section (VBAC) deliveries, 16 sets of twins and several donations to the Birth Tissue Donor Service (BTDS) program.

For patients who qualify, the benefits of VBAC can be numerous, Munsell said. The patient can avoid major surgery, return to work or other activities more quickly and lower the risk for complications. Each patient needs to have a detailed discussion with her doctor regarding her specific situation before considering VBAC deliveries.

The BTDS program collects healthy placental tissue, which is normally discarded, and sends it on for processing into allografts. Allografts are used to cure burns, skin ulcers, ocular issues and more.

In keeping with tradition, Mary Lanning Healthcare will present a special gift to the first baby.

Members of the media who wish to check if a New Year’s baby has arrived may call the Family Care Center at 402-461-5226 on Thursday, January 1.
