Dickinson County Public Health Offers Free Radon Test Kits

Dickinson County Public Health is offering free radon test kits to Iowa homeowners, giving local families a simple way to find out whether their home has high levels of this invisible gas.

Iowa has the highest average indoor radon levels in the nation. Approximately 70% of Iowa homes test above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) action level, and northwest Iowa is among the areas with the highest levels in the state.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil. It can seep into homes through cracks and openings in the foundation and build up inside, especially when windows and doors are closed. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung cancer. Because radon can’t be seen or smelled, testing is the only way to know if a home is affected.

“Most people have no idea radon could be a problem in their home until they test,” said Brandi Larsen, Director of Population and Public Health at Lakes Regional Healthcare. “Here in northwest Iowa, it’s more common than people think. A free test kit takes the guesswork out of it, and it’s one of the easiest things you can do to protect your family’s health.”

Homeowners whose first test shows high radon levels will be asked to test their home a second time to confirm the results. If the second test confirms high levels, the homeowner may have the opportunity to receive help with radon mitigation funding if they qualify.

The program is open to homeowners only. It is not available to renters, businesses, or commercial properties.
