Community Hospital Welcomes Rural Immersion Students to McCook
From job shadows and clinical rotations to internships and immersive learning experiences, Community Hospital continues to invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals.
One of those opportunities is the University of Nebraska at Kearney's Rural Immersion Program, which sent healthcare students to McCook for a firsthand look at rural medicine and community life. The program allows students to explore healthcare careers beyond the classroom while gaining a deeper understanding of the unique opportunities available in rural Nebraska.
During their stay in McCook, students are housed at ROOTS (Rural Opportunities Offering Tomorrow’s Success), a dedicated student housing facility designed to support learners completing educational experiences in the community. ROOTS provides a comfortable home base while helping students connect with the people, places, and quality of life that make rural Nebraska a rewarding place to live and work.
Throughout their experience, students connect with providers and staff across multiple clinical areas, observe patient care, and learn how healthcare professionals work together to meet the needs of patients in a rural setting. Participants also meet with community organizations and local leaders to gain insight into the many factors that contribute to the health and vitality of a community.
While the Rural Immersion Program provides a concentrated experience, it reflects Community Hospital's broader commitment to workforce development. Throughout the year, the organization welcomes students from a variety of educational programs for clinical rotations, internships, observations, and job-shadowing opportunities. These experiences help students explore career options while building connections to rural communities.
